BRIEF

There is currently a large overpopulation of dogs and cats in the USA. It is estimated that between 5 and 10 million pets are euthanized each year because there are simply not enough homes for them. Animal shelters are faced with making the difficult choice to euthanize animals when they run out of space to house them.

Target

The target of this PSA is Hispanics with pets that have not yet been spayed or neutered and/or Hispanics in areas with many stray dogs or cats. They love their pets and strive to provide good care for them. However, they may perceive spaying and neutering as cruel procedures that end the animal’s sexual desire. They believe that allowing their pet to reproduce is a healthy and natural function, but they don’t realize that they are actually contributing to the pet overpopulation problem. They may not understand that by finding homes for their pet’s kittens or puppies, they are taking away a potential home for an animal that has reached the end of its time at a shelter. In some cases, Hispanic pet owners may be informed of the benefits of spaying or neutering their pet, but they believe that the procedure is expensive. In reality, many animal shelters and local government agencies offer low-cost or free spay/neuter programs.

Insight

Hispanics tend to believe that spaying or neutering is a very cruel procedure that takes away the animal’s sexual desire making the pet’s life “less exciting”. As a matter of fact, the most common denomination for neutering in Spanish is “castracion”, a term which carries very negative connotations.
